More Making of a Comic

In my ever continuing effort to provide help and insite for those like me who are in wonder and awe of how things work here is yet another Dark Horse Comic Making of a Comic. I found the making of Solomon Kane Death’s Black Riders #1, as with all previous ones, well done. Enjoy!

Project: Logo Update

So, with the new fun tablet which is working great still I’ve started a new little project that I’m hoping pays off. I’ve decided to update the logo. Not really changing it just basically cleaning it up along with the rest of the site. (You may have noticed a few changes already).
So far what you see on display at the top of the page is the first attempt. It’s ‘okay’ but there are still a few things I don’t like about it. Kind of strange really, I wanted to go with simple white or black as I thought it would be easier to manage. What I’ve come to find is what it really does is make your imperfections of the image almost stand out more. Everything has to look ‘just right’. Well I’m not quite there with it yet. :)

Still alive…

Well, things are progressing much slower than I thought they would. At this point I was hoping I could show/tell you about what I was working on. Unfortunately, I haven’t been working on much other than programming stuff for work.

I can tell you I got a new phone. In fact, I’m using it right now to enter this post. Also, you can now view this site on a iPhone/iPod Touch or Android based device. I figure since I now have such a device I might as well have a site that looks nice on it. :)

I did do a little bit of character development recently. It’s not really much to say but atleast it’s something.

W Wa Wac Waco Wacom

Okay, I don’t care what others say Wacom tablets are the BEST. I just picked up a small Bamboo Fun so that I can take it with my when I am on the laptop. It is the perfect size and well, perfect. I had an older Graphire that worked great. The Bamboo is replacing that. I like that it has the buttons and zoomer. The old Graphire didn’t have that. I would have liked to have gotten just a straight small Wacom tablet but well, it was more expensive and I just don’t have the cash. Actually, for the same reason I still don’t own a Cintiq. :) Someday.

I will have a review of this little thing later after I finish playing with it. :)

Holy Rusted Metal?!?!

Just came accross this link from ABC News. It seems Marvel is going to become a part of Disney in a $4 billion deal. I wonder what this means for Marvel as a comicbook publisher since Disney is in the arena but not very active here in the states. This could be Disney’s way of getting back into the US market though… Plus it give Disney a chance to bridge the age gaps from Mickey and Pooh-bear to Spidey, Wolvy and beyond… If you think about it from a catalog of properties standpoint Disney is making out on the deal with 5000 new properties. Add in the way the Marvel Movie Machine has been churning out hits for a quite a few years now and it seems even sweeter. Now add this plus Disney’s ownership of Pixar and you have the possibility of some fantastic animated movies too.

I have mixed feelings about this deal though… I mean I think it is great for Disney but what exactly does it mean for Marvel? Will they continue like a normal comicbook publisher or will they continue their trend of pricing themselves right out of the market they helped create? Will they go all digital? Or does Disney have other plans entirely? I guess as always… Time will tell…

New Toy

I (FINALLY!!!) bought something I’ve been wanting for a very long time. Seven years to be exact. You see, about 15 years ago I had this fantastic flatbed scanner but about seven years ago it died. Now you might think today no big deal but back then I hadn’t used the scanner for some time and had many other bills to attend to so buying a new scanner wasn’t tops on the priority list. Well, over the last few years I have missed the scanner. Since I have recently started drawing again I thought I should really have one again. I just wanted a scanner but most are attached to the top of a printer now. I really wasn’t looking for a “printer” as my LaserJet 5M has been great for the last 14 years (wow, that’s longer than I thought but back then is when I bought it… USED) and is still doing a great job for me. So, off to the office supply store I went. Why? Well, believe it or not the office supply store has a better selection of printers that I can just pick up and go home with then most other electronics related brick and mortar stores. At least the ones that are close to where I lay my head at night. I found a Cannon I liked and was in my price range (read as low) but they were out of then. I was about to forget about it when I came across a HP Photosmart C4480 for the same price. Now this caught my attention because as I said before I already have a very old HP printer and it has done great for me. SOOOOO, I’m now hoping THIS HP will do just as well. If it doesn’t last as long that is okay as I didn’t pay much for it. It takes beautiful scans and prints out very nicely for an inkjet. I actually wanted a multi functional color laser jet printer but all of the ones I found are way out of my price range.

So far the only down side is that isn’t a network printer like my 5M, but that is actually okay since I would need it hooked up to the computer for scanning purposes anyways. Since the reason for getting the thing was FOR the scanner it’s only a minor downside. :)

So did I make a good choice? Does anyone have a better one for the price?

Out of these comic book universes which would you most like to see continued? (Publisher in parenthesis)

  • Continuity Universe (Continuity Comics)
  • CrossGen Universe (CrossGen)
  • New Universe (Marvel)
  • Ultraverse (Malibu)
  • Valiant Universe (Valiant Comics)
  • Wildstorm Universe (Image later DC)

I know there are probably loads of other to choose from also. I chose these since they were pretty successful during their time. I guess what I’m looking for is of these which do you miss the most?

Ever want to do a comic?

Ever been interested in doing a comicbook? Ever think about doing it online as a webcomic? The guys from Half Pixel would like to guide you along. Half Pixel, or as they are probably better known:

Not too long ago they purchased the internet domain webcomics.com and are now running it as a HOW TO kind of site for those who would be interested in getting into the field.

Have a look. Really good stuff.
